The world famous Bird Cage Theatre, also referred to as The Bird Cage Opera House Saloon, was a fancy way in the 1880's of describing a combination Saloon, Gambling Hall and a House of Ill Repute and was known across America by its disreputable reputation. "Doc" Holliday, Johnny Ringo, Diamond Jim Brady, Bat Masterson, Wyatt Earp, William Randolph Hearst frequented, eat, gambled and fought here. Greats such as Lotta Crabtree, Lillian Russell, Lily Langtry, and Lola Montez are just a few of the famous performers of the past who played on the hand-painted Stage.
The Bird Cage closed its doors in 1889 and is now a Museum.
Visitors in the building have often reported feeling sudden cold spots and the uneasy feeling of being watched. People have reported hearing female singing and crowd voices/noises in empty rooms. The sounds of laughing, yelling, and Music have been reported to pour out of the building at night. Some of the sounds seem to come from the Balconies above the Main Floor.
Visitors during the day have smelled fresh scents of Cigar Smoke and the sharp odour of Whiskey. A Young Boy who died of Yellow Fever and a former Owner have been reportedly seen. Also several unidentified individual(s) wearing period clothing from the 1800s, and, in particular, a Man in Black wearing a Visor has been witnessed walking across the Stage. Objects keep being moved from place to place. People have also been violently jostled by unseen presence(s).
There were gunfights there - there are still bullets in the walls - and there is a story of the brutal killing of Margarita - a lovely Lady of the Evening. She was sitting on the lap of Gambler Billy Milgreen when suddenly Billy's regular girl, another Bird Cage trollop by the name of Gold Dollar, entered the room holding a double-edged Stiletto. In a fit of fury, Gold Dollar proceeded to cut Margarita's heart out. She almost had the job done when she heard that the Marshal was coming. She then ran through the Bird Cage and out the back door, covered in blood. No murder charges were filed for lack of the murder weapon which she mysteriously disposed of as she fled the back of the Bird Cage. Ironically, 101 years later this Stiletto was found behind the building and is now on display in the Museum.
