Crown Hotel, Wells

There has been a catalogue of incidents at this city centre hotel - some more strange than others.

Figures have been seen walking along corridors, heard banging around in rooms and caught disrupting the dining room.

Several members of staff saw a dark figure in the hotel's front bar on camera after hours but there was no one there. Another staff member watched as something pushed candles and knocked napkins off tables.

But perhaps the most bizarre thing that has happened has been the appearance of black barley seeds in large quantities in some of the bedrooms. No one knows how they got there or where they came from!

In 1998 staff complained about the hauntings to the Wells Journal.

Housekeeper Corrine Goodall even kept notes of her sightings.

"Seeing a fellow staff member come into room eight out of the corner of my eye I started chatting to her. There was no one there and the member of staff was downstairs in reception," she said.

"A woman all in black with a black suitcase went upstairs past me. I could hear her knocking about in each room. Every room I looked in was empty, but I could hear her in the room next door.

"I thought it might be someone casing the place so I went to get Alan, but he couldn't find her.

"A very old couple, frail with walking sticks, came through the glass front doors and went upstairs. I went down to see what room they had booked into so it could be cleaned.

"No one had seen them so I went back upstairs to see if they were lost. There was no one there and they hadn't come back down either. Another member of staff heard them walking about upstairs.

"I sat in the dining room while tables were being laid and watched as something knocked napkins and a candle off the tables.

"The member of staff had to go back, pick them up and put them on the table," said Corrine.

Hotel general manager Louise Osmond said: "People may laugh about ghosts, but after my experience at the Crown I have no doubt they are about."
