Donkey Sent To Prison For Attack
Tuesday May 20, 2008

A donkey has been sent to prison in southern Mexico for a brutal case of ass-ault and battery.

Donkey went apeThe animal was locked up at a local jail that normally holds people for public drunkenness and other disturbances after it bit and kicked two men near a ranch in the state of Chiapas.

The two victims accuse it of biting one of them in the chest and then kicking the other as he came to the rescue, fracturing his ankle.

Police said it took half a dozen men to control the enraged beast.

Police officer Sinar Gomez said the donkey would remain behind bars until its owner agreed to pay the men's medical bills.

"Around here, if someone commits a crime they are jailed," he said. "No matter who they are."

The owner said he would try to come to an arrangement to pay the men's bills, estimated at around £200.

Chiapas police have thrown animals in the clink before, including a bull that ate corn crops and destroyed two wooden market stalls in March.

In 2006, a dog was locked up for 12 days for biting someone.

THERE'S A ANGRY MOOSE ON THE LOOSE ;- in norway

Angry moose attack dogsled, after another runs wild in clothing store

Two moose charged a dogsled led by 12 huskies over the weekend. The attack came just a day after another moose broke into a children's clothing store in Lillehammer.
The so-called "king of the forest" is behaving rather strangely these days.

The two incidents were the latest in a string of unusual moose behaviour in Norway. The country has a large moose population, but the huge animals are generally shy and stay away from people and populated areas.

All the more reason why Reidar Stenmark was stunned when two "well-grown moose calves" stormed out of a forest in Nordland on Sunday and attacked a dogsled he was guiding.

"I yelled and screamed at the moose to scare them away, but they didn't pay any attention to me," Stenmark told local newspaper Avisa Nordland.

Stenmark was out exercising his dogs when the two moose suddenly crossed their path and started running directly for the dogs. One of his dogs was hurled over on his side, while another was kicked.

"I knew we had to get away," Stenmark said. He said he managed to get his lead dogs, named Sjakk and Anette, to react, but they didn't manage to get all the other shocked dogs to pull together and run.

The dogs finally did start barking and squealing and moving to get flee the angry moose. Both Stenmark and his dogs escaped in remarkably good shape, with only some bruises.

There was no indication of what prompted the moose to attack, just as wildlife officials further south in Lillehammer were baffled as to why a fully grown moose ran through a plate glass window at a downtown shop on Saturday.

That incident began about 11am, when the store was open for business. Shocked customers and staff suddenly heard glass shatter and had a confused moose in their midst.

"I got really scared," clerk Randi Espås told TV2. She and her customers ran out of the store and called for help.

Police, firefighters and wildlife officials quickly cordoned off the area and tried to lure the moose, which was bleeding from cuts caused by broken glass, outside, to no avail. They finally managed to shoot him with a tranquilizer gun and haul him out of the store.

Some officials speculate that the moose was hungry and had wandered into the former Olympic town in search of food. Confused or in a panic, the moose was then drawn by the reflection of the glass window and lights within the store.

A similar incident occured in Elverum last summer, when a moose broke into a local grocery store. In both cases, the animals caused lots of interior damage and had to be destroyed because of their injuries.

ANOTHER MOOSE ON THE LOOSE STORY

Moose attacks laundry rack

There's either a love- or hate-relationship going on between local moose and outdoor laundry racks in Norway. Another garden was plundered last week in Gjøvik, and only the clothes that were hanging on the rack were left behind.

Moose can get rather bold when they're hungry. This one munched on a bunch of hay hung up as decoration on an Oslo home.

"I guess the moose didn't have any use for them," sighed Else Berntsen as she plucked up the clothes and clothespins that were strewn all over her backyard.

Berntsen told newspaper Oppland Arbeiderblad that she has no doubt a moose is the culprit. Only the so-called "King of the Forest" is known to resort to such theft.

Several similar incidents have been reported in recent months. In one unfortunate case, a male moose was spotted with a laundry rack tangled in its antlers, and he later was found dead in the woods, with the rack still attached.

It remains unclear why local moose go after the laundry racks. Some experts suggest the moose confuse the racks with rival moose, because the racks can resemble an antler system. Others wonder whether laundry flapping in the breeze attracts the large animals, either fascinating or threatening them.

Still others point to another bizarre but common problem when moose venture into residential areas in late autumn: Fruit left hanging, or on the ground, from apple trees literally ferments and can intoxicate animals that eat it. Perhaps the moose in Gjøvik was slightly drunk and therefore mistook the laundry rack for another moose?

"There were no old apples lying in my garden," retorts Berntsen.

Wildlife officials tried to track down the moose after witnesses reported seeing a moose with a laundry rack, but were unsuccessful.

Runaway hamster 'in custody'
Thursday, 12 June 2008,

A hamster has been "taken into custody" after handing himself in at a police station, a force said.
The brown and white rodent walked into Cheltenham Road East Police Station, in Gloucestershire, but it is not believed he committed any crime.

Bemused officers said the pet was now locked up at a nearby animal shelter where it is hoped his owners will come and bail him out.
