I believe that this Great House, was once called the Fleece, and is Elland's Westgate, It is like you say is meant to be haunted by the ghost of Leathery Coit, a peddler who was brutally murdered in an upstairs room at the inn. When his body was dragged downstairs after the killing, a trail of blood was left on the wooden stairs that no amount of scrubbing could remove.
Its said that Leathery Coit had always stabled his horses and carriage in an adjoining barn whilst staying at the Fleece, and it was not long after his murder that his ghost was seen driving his carriage out of the barn late at night, furiously along Dog Lane to Old Earth Farm, accompanied by a violent rush of wind, even on the calmest of nights.
The last known sighting of Leathery Coit driving his horses was January, 1915, by a couple who were said to have been absolutely terrified by what they had witnessed. The staircase which was meant to have been bloodstrained , like you say has now been reported to have been removed.
