In 1899 the steamship Hannah Regan was at sea off the coast of China. The captain of the ship reported seeing a strange looking ship. It had looked like it was very old and had an old fashioned rig. The ship was seen moving like it was in a middle of a storm and the ship sails were wind-torn. The ship faded to a shadow and disappeared after about twenty minutes.
During World War II a German Captain of a U-boat reported seeing the ghostly ship. They were so frightened by the sighting they went into enemy waters rather than stay where they were. This ghostly ship was The Flying Dutchman.
Many years ago The Flying Dutchman (a Dutch ship) had sailed into a very bad storm. The crew begged the Captain of the ship to join them in praying to God to save them. But angered by the situation the Captain cursed God and called for the devil to help him. The devil came at once and promised to save the ship. In return for the favour the Captain and the ship were doomed to sail forever, bringing bad luck to all who saw them.
The ship has mainly been sighted in the Indian or Pacific Oceans.

So did any subsequent salvage operation(s) after the tug from San Francisco located the wreck ever recover any of the "over a million dollar's worth of gold...(bound for Europe and after) She sank in deep water near Okinawa. Her log, with the bodies of the captain, first mate, and four of her crew, drifted ashore in an open boat some weeks later. The log contained reference to a 'phantom brig, bathed in a red-gold glow.' Ominously, that was the last entry."
The evening before the "Two divers went down to the wreck...found dead with their air-pipes severed" it was "the captain of the tug" who saw "right through" the "sailing vessel" that "came right alongside" and he "could see right through her, though every detail of her deck work and rigging stood out clearly...(then) she sank slowly beneath the sea and disappeared." Other "mishaps" occurred and the salvage attempt "was eventually abandoned". |
