The Haunting of Robin Hood’s Grave nr Mirfield West yorkshire.

Not many people know that Robin Hood was a Yorkshireman and even buried in West Yorkshire.

A family by the name Armytage once lived in this area near to some land that was once occupied by Cistercian nuns. This area was being Kirklees. There was more than an insularity which set the mansion hall apart. Located in the woods behind in the grounds of Kirklees Hall is what is said to be the grave of Robin Hood many rumours of paranormal surround this place and are sustained by local tales of ghosts of prioresses and nuns , plus the death of Robin Hood whose grave is so imperturbably marked as lying within Kirklees halls grounds in spite of any facts which might suggest to the contrary.

There appears reported mention of ghostly activity around Robin Hood's Grave, but considering the history of Robin's death - cursed by a witch on his way to the nunnery, then murdered by an apostate nun and cast into an unhallowed grave, it is hardly surprising that the site is report to be haunted

An elderly lady, its said once witnessed silver arrows in the sky above Kirklees hall when visiting her old aunt at Hartshead in the early years of the last century. She also reports hearing Robin calling for Marian.

Another sighting was made by a tenant farmer of Kirklees in 1926, ''One day, he recalls, ' I was sitting on the grave of robin hood shooting rabbits. As I was about to shoot at a rabbit when i felt someone tap me on my shoulder, in shock knowing that no one else was around my shotgun went off accidentally, knocking two of my front teeth out on its recoil. There was nobody to be seen at the time anywhere when i looked round and searched the near by area.
This farmer goes on to tell us that on another occasion while he was on my way home from the Three Nuns pub, he was walking through the woods something fell out of a tree and knocked me him to the ground. When he stood up again he could see the old gatehouse in a window of this building he could clearly see a man with a bow who he believes to have been Robin Hood's ghost".

In 1963 its reported that a guitarist visited Robin's grave with a friend. when they were about twenty yards from the grave when they claim to seen a white robed woman who seemed to glide towards them. What scared the two men most was how silently she moved over the twigs and bracken. In 1972, in full daylight, the same two men on another visit to robins hoods grave both saw the same apparition , this time the ghost stopped a few yards from them, enabling one of the men to remember a few more details about the ghost who he says was a woman wearing a long white dress with a square neck and long sleeves which accords with the habit of a Cistercian nun.

A further sighting by another nocturnal visitor that was reported proved a terrifying experience when she saw two figures hovering in the trees surrounding the grave ,who she took to be the evil prioress and her paramour Red Roger of Doncaster." I felt, and saw, what I can only describe streams of evil pouring out of the trees towards me'' the witness stated.

The list of incidents that are related to the grave continues and includes an exorcism, i believe at some time in the past ?

Oh wow that was an interesting read so that will be another place to investigate more. It should be fun and scary I suppose but certainly would be most interesting.

Its rather a shame that you cannot get to investigate but never mind there are other places.
