Sam, the Dog on Death Row

The owner of a dog sentenced to death for barking is making a bid to save the animal's life.

William Shaw, of Aberdeen, and his legal team are returning to court for the next stage of the battle to save his West Highland terrier, Sam.

A panel of judges, sitting at the Appeal Court in Edinburgh, is hearing a plea to reverse the sentence against Sam. The appeal was granted last month by Lord Cameron of Lochbroom
.

Sam became a cause celebre after being given a death sentence by a justice of the peace following a case at Aberdeen District Court last year.

His decision followed a complaint from Mr Shaw's elderly neighbour, who said the dog's incessant barking over many years was a nuisance.

A campaign to save the dog immediately got under way, attracting the backing of screen legend, animal lover, (and racism groupie ) Brigitte Bardot.

Last month a court decided that Sam should undergo retraining, in a bid to correct his behaviour.

The death row pet was released from the care of Aberdeen District Court after Mr Shaw agreed to have him rehoused at a rehabilitation centre
