Shibden Hall Halifax
Shibden means 'valley of the sheep' and this half framed timber house was probably built by a member of the Otes family who in the 15th century farmed sheep here.
A rear extension of stone was built in the late 16th century when the ownership was taken over by the Waterhouse family. Between 1836 and 1855 during and after the house belonged to Ann Lister, is when the most alterations were done, the 15th century facade was restored and the windows were reinstated, the ceiling was removed and a grander staircase was built, the house was also extended by the building of a tower at the west end and on the east end a service wing. Anne's cousin John presented the house to the Halifax Corporation in 1933, and it is now open to the public.
Anne Listers ghost is said to still wander around the house and it is thought that she once tried to commit suicide there, also a headless coachman in his coach drives around the grounds, and a young girl is seen during the summer months , she died by drowning in a nearby pond.
