The Three Nuns Pub at Mirfield West Yorkshire

The pub stands in the grounds of the former Kirklees priory along side the Nun Brook that takes it's name after a young nun drown herself there after her affair with a priest was disclosed.

The present three nuns pub although a relatively recent building stands on the site of the former inn, the original inn was located in the present day car park under which the original pub's cellars are said to remain to this day and are connected to the new building. Some years ago when the pub changed hands some refurbishment work was carried out at the pub. A carved oak panel baring a rams head carving was found concealed in the old cellars it is reported that this panel might have formed an alter piece and involved something to do with the dark arts. The panel was removed by the brewery for display in another of their pubs where it seemed more in fitting with the decor of this other pub but immediately after it's removal from the Three Nuns pub strange happenings began to occur . Glass bottles would break for no apparent reason in the pub and food would spoil overnight while still in the freezers. It was suggested that something evil wanted it's alter back, so the carved panel was returned , but re-attached to the wall out of public sight in the pub.
The activity is then said to have stopped.

Not far from the Three Nuns pub stands the ancient "Dumb Steeple" it's true origin is lost in the mists of time but it is said to be associated with the Luddites who formed up in the field behind before marching to attack the Rawfolds Mill at Cleckheaton , 17 of them hanged for their part in this and other events.
Its claimed that the ghost of Ned Ludd and his army of men can sometimes be seen moving off to attack Rawfolds mill from a field near the inn.

"Black Dick" was a gambler , bad debter , highwayman who indulged in popular piracy to pay off his debts . It has been speculated he murdered a servant girl in his employ after discovering she was pregnant with his child . He is thought to have been killed at the entrance to one of the tunnels beneath Almondbury in a duel over money . To this day people report seeing the spectre of Black dick most commonly on july 5th , the day on which he died
