UFO highlights of 2000
The first quarter of the New year brought some interesting sightings to light, although most could be readily explained. One of the first UK UFO cases of the year occurred in Hull.
Twenty three year old Belgian Student Estzer Baudin, claims to have seen a “flying saucer” while looking out of her windows in the early hours of the morning. The sighting took place on the 2nd January.
“At about 2:30am I saw the strangest thing…like a flying saucer, going back and forth in the sky overhead.” “It had a large red light and a blue light, and it was shining a bright ray of light straight down.”
Estzer also claims that the UFO made a weird noise over the ten minutes while she watched. 1 Another student who claims to have witnessed a UFO in the early hours is Georgina W. The twenty year old student witnesses a glowing object hover in the sky for over an hour before landing near a motorway.
Georgina tells “I had a very bad cold and woke in the middle of the night about 2:00am. I decided to look outside since I couldn’t sleep and that’s when I first spotted the UFO.” I asked her what happened next.
“The UFO hovered near to the motorway then it lowered and stopped glowing. I’m convinced that it landed and that it was monitored by a helicopter all the time.”
The air and police authorities, both denied that a helicopter was in the region at the time. Recently it has come to light that a private helicopter may be the cause of recent sightings as well, this has to be confirmed but cannot be ignored. Georgina addeds “I don’t believe it was a helicopter or aeroplane, after it took of it began to glow again before shooting off in to the sky. What helicopter does that?”2
Bright light in Lincolnshire
A married couple saw “a bright light” glide over their house and travel three miles from Holbeach towards Kings Lynne in Lincolnshire.
"The object was travelling slowly with a flashing light much like a navigation light on a plane. "Suddenly, a large white light appeared in the centre of the object with flickering intermittent lights around the object."
The witnesses estimated that the UFO was three miles away and hovering at an estimated altitude of 15,000 feet".
The object hovered for approximately ten minutes, at which point the object then dipped to the right slowly, then shot up away into the sky"
The husband is an ex-RAF observer of 25 years standing. The ex-RAF witness also operated a radar set while in the service.
Police probe “Red fireball” over South Yorkshire
South Yorkshire Police were probing reports in February regarding a “red ball of fire” which was seen to descend near the village of Firbeck near Rotherham.
After a couple saw a fireball hovering in the sky from their garden the police from nearby village, Dinnington was called out. A patrol car went to Beacon Hill, the highest point in the area, when they met another couple from the village of Carr who had driven out after spotting a “large purple/pink light” moving slowly over a farm house, before disappearing behind trees. Checks were carried out with the Sheffield and East Midlands airports and police inquires are ongoing to trace other witnesses. Strangely the police suspect a remote controlled aircraft or helicopter but so their inquiries have lead to nothing. 3
Shuttle to blame for pilot sightings over the UK?
Reports of a "rod" type UFO hit the airwaves on the weekend of the 12.02.00. Enthusiasts who enjoy scanning the messages of pilots and the illegal air bands heard numerous pilots report observing a UFO over the Midlands and Yorkshire areas. One enthusiast reported "At 18.05 Friday night. I was unloading the car. Looking up I spotted two vertical lights, the lower light slightly trailing the upper. I yelled into the house and my mother and brother both came out in time to see it before it went behind thick cloud. I dashed upstairs to my scanner and it immediately locked on to 126.75 which is a North Eastern Upper Airspace frequency."
He then claims to have heard "Several pilots quizzing Air Traffic Control (ATC) about the "Traffic" they were seeing and asking for identification. ATC replied that they had nothing on their screen."
After looking up information for air traffic control for Manchester and East Midlands Airports, who denied that the event took place, investigations lead me to website for NASA.
Using the NASA website for information on Shuttle launches I was able to match the time of the launch and subsequent UFO sighting in the UK. Mission STS-99 launched from Kennedy Space Centre at 12:43pm (East Coast time) Approximately nine minutes later the external fuel tank of the Space Shuttle and the excess fuel were released and the tank continued around the earth, to re-enter and burn up over the Pacific. 4
