I must thank the staff of Thurrock Museum for all of their help on this investigation as they pulled out all the stops in helping me research the building.

What we found out was that the building was given permission to be built in 1929 but was not built until about 1931-37, the picture above was taken in 1939 and you can see the sand bags around the original entrance.

I was told of many strange things that had happened in the building but two things stood out that might be the cause of the hauntings.

I was told that a lady collapsed outside the fire station in the 1970's, she was taken inside and laid on a bed just by the bay doors, this is now where a photocopier is, but after talking to retired fire-fighters, the location of this bed might have been just around the corner in a small office. I was also told by retired and by still serving fire-fighters that they gave their ghost a name, Mrs Martin, at least now I had a name to go and look up.

The fire-fighters also told me about a fire officer that is said to have hung himself from the loft hatch in the top corridor in about 1960. I was told that the fire officer felt guilty about the death of two of his crew on a shout and believed that it was his fault.

After a lot of research I can say that these stories do bear the truth and in fact these incidents did happen, there is only a brief mention of the fire officer in the archives at County Hall, Chelmsford, but I have been asked to respect his living relatives and not to name him or give the date that this happened, this did cause me a problem as I cannot now say if my Mediums gave the right names on the night.

As for the lady that collapsed outside the fire station, I only found out her information by a chance meeting with a gentleman at the Museum. He was there gathering information on his family history. He asked me what I was looking for in the old newspapers and when I told him that I was looking up the old fire station he said he knew it well. He also remembered the lady that had died inside the station and told me that her family still live in Tilbury. Due to this I will also not be printing her name in this report as the family thinks that she has passed over quite happily and I do not think it would be nice to tell them that she is thought to be haunting the fire station to this day.

I also spoke to local residents that told me of the old night watchman that looked after the building and they told me that he was never seen without his dog. The staff that work in the building today have said that sometimes as they walk the corridors they hear a very loud growl.

Some of the other stories I have been told by fire-fighters and locals do seem to have got a bit mixed up over the years.
One ghost sighting is this - a fireman was taking a tray of teas up to the activity room and as he walked along a corridor upstairs he saw a figure walk towards him so he stepped aside to let them pass and as he did so he realised that this was not a person but a ghost. When he looked back at the tray of teas all the teas were gone, he then went back to the kitchen only to find all the cups washed up and ready to be used.
This ghost story might be a mix of a few sightings that have been seen in the building but what I do know is that I have spoken to some firemen that work in the Corringham fire station that say they would never go back into the building.

I have visited the new fire station that took over from Tilbury, now at the Orsett Cock, and met fire-fighters that used to work at Tilbury. They told me of very similar stories and they also said they knew of fire-fighters that would not go back to the old fire station on their own and they were very happy when they moved out.
