Once a travellers inn, where weary travellers could get a meal, a drink and somewhere to sleep for the night whilst on their travels. In the time the old rectory building served as an inn it had a few well known visitors to stay, probably the most well known now being Louis de Rochefort. Louis de Rochefort once stayed at the inn on his way to see King Charles the first during his imprissonment in Carisbrooke Castle, supposedly to pass on a message to him. What this message was we will never know as he was murdered in his sleep. I t is said that as he gasped his last few breaths he vowed to haunt the place until his body was taken back to his homeland of France.
In the 1960's during some building work on the house, builders discovered a skeleton that is believed to be the skeleton of Louis. The skeleton is still on display in the courtyard, maybe this is the reason a figure of a tall male ghost has been reported to be seen walking through the courtyard.
