Bridewell /Leeds Town HallLeeds Town Hall
The Bridewell is a small prison beneath the town hall & is haunted by the ghost of criminal Charlie Peace, a violent thief and double murderer.
After years of evading capture, he was finally arrested in London.
Initially incarcerated at Armley Prison, on February 3, 1879 he was taken to the borough lock-up at the Town Hall in preparation for his trial the next day.
Heightened security accompanied his transport and holding in a large cell known as the 'sick room'.
After being found guilty of murder, Peace was hanged at Armley Prison on Tuesday, February 25 1879.
His ghost is now trapped within the confines of the Leeds Town Hall ;-Bridewell, a place he could not escape from; in life or in death.
