DUDLEY CASTLE;- Dudley, midlandsDUDLEY CASTLE
Castle Road
Dudley
It would be disappointing if a castle such as this, which was included in the Doomsday Book and has had a long chequered history, was not haunted. In 1934 Mr. T. Bloomer of Dudley reported seeing. ` two elderly people come round from the keep dressed in either seventeenth or eighteenth century clothes. They were walking arm-in-arm and the man held a crooked walking stick. and wore a very tall hat. They went straight past and up into the keep. I followed them, but there was know-one there.`
On a number of occasions the inexplicable sound of the clash of steel has been heard, and human-like mummurings` have been reported, but officials of the Dudley Zoological Society, which is house within the walls of the castle, claim that such incidents can be attributed to the animals. They also state that the most recent occurrence in 1977 actually was the sighting of one of their white peacocks, but, surely the witness, a 19 year old working in the restaurant, would know the difference between an albino bird and `the shape of a woman in a white gown`, which is what he reported to the police. And a peacock would not, I'm sure, produce the fright from which the youngster suffered, and it could hardly be responsible for the `weird noises` which accompanied the human-shape figure. The police were impressed enough to visit the zoo and the castle to `check` out the report` and they don't normally waste their time

Dudley castle ;- West MidlandsHaunted Location: Dudley West Midlands - First founded in 1071 Dudley Castle was built on a limestone hill overlooking the town. John Dudley rebuilt the Castle in 1510 as a Renassance Palace and it became the residence of many Lords. It was a grand Castle and was visited by many Royals over the periods. Like many buildings during the Industrial Revolution it had coalmine quarries dug underneath its foundations and subsequently there were many deaths and injuries suffered by the workers. This, coupled with a fire lasting for three days saw the Castle abandoned and left in ruins. The Dudley family eventually regained the Castle and it is now home to Dudley Zoo.
It is said to be one of the most haunted locations in The Midlands and this is not suprising when you consider the history attached to the building. Many of the Zoo workers who work in the 17th Century Stone House have seen and heard things which have terrified them and consequently they ensure that they are rarely alone.
There have been sightings of a ghostly figure named The Grey Lady, who is thought to be the Ghost of Mrs Doroty Beaumont. Mediums have picked up on her anguish as she appears to be looking for her husband who was prevented from being buried next to her. Other apparitions of a Black Monk have been seen along with a medieval Lady. Poltergeist activity has also been witnessed with stones being thrown. There have been unexplained sounds such as chanting and whispering heard by many. There have also been dramatic temperature changes felt.

Dudley CastleDudley Castle
The castle stands on a limestone crag.It was built in 1071.Extensive work has been carried out over the years by various families including the De Somery family ,Sutton family and that of John dudley.
Famous ghosts of the castle include a pair of legs, an elderly lady, a drummer boy and the Grey Lady. The story of the pair of legs is indeed an odd one .The legs are said to be those of John de Somery who was buried in 1322.It is believed that his stone coffin was split in two and this forever condemned him to wadering round with no body. The remains of the stone coffin can be seen in the undercroft at the castle.A image can be found in the picture section of the site. But it has been said that the two halves are from different dates and not from the same casket.....So he may never be reunited with his body !
During the seventeenth century the castle was beseiged by the Parliamentarians and during this fateful battle a small drummer boy was shot whilst trying to deliver a note of surrender. The boy is said to be heard and seen around the gatehouse and steps of the castle.
An elderly lady is reportedly seen at the castle. She hung herself from the ramparts after some local youths killed her cat. Some say she may have been a witch but she is often seen around the sight of her suicide.
In the gift shop staff are always reporting paranormal activity .The ghost is said to trouble the staff and the displays.
The most famous though is the Grey Lady. She is thought to be Dorothy Beaumont who died at the castle during the siege of 1646.The story goes that her funeral cortege was allowed to proceed through the gates of the castle during the seige so that she could be buried in the church grounds at the top of Dudley High street but her child who had died the previous year had been buried at the lower church and she is looking for her child .Many sightings are reported of her two of the most famous are when an actress was paid to portray her during a tour and the bemused tourists asked why there were two ladies as they could see the actress and another lady dressed the same standing behind her. The second is when the castle ran an event that required people to wear fancy dress from the era and the lady won it did indeed have an accurate costume but when they went to give her the prize she had vanished.
The castle has been the scene of a very turbulent history and there have been many accidents and deaths have taken place on the site.It is a very paranormal site and the zoo keepers and staff at the castle are very surprised if nothing is reported by visitors to the site.Although they themselves are now accostomed to it...
The Station Hotel Dudley....
The hotel is located directly opposite Dudley Castle.Although originall built in 1910 it was demolished and rebuilt larger in 1936 . There are two rooms which have recorded the most activity , these being rooms 214 and 217.
