Ilam Hall:- ASHBOURNE, DERBYSHIREIlam Hall:- ASHBOURNE, DERBYSHIRE
Ilam Hall is situated in the heart of the Derbyshire countryside, one of the most beautiful scenic places in the UK. From the time of the Reformation until the early 1800's it was the seat of the influential Port family. From 1809 it was sold on to a David Pike-Watts and upon his death the Hall passed to his daughter Mary. The Hall seen today dates from 1826 from when Mary's husband, Jessie Watts-Russell, hired renowned architect of the time James Trubshaw who also built Alton Towers. After the death of Jessie in 1875 the estate passed to the Hanbury family who then sold it on. Sir Robert McDougall saved the Hall from destruction and donated it to the National Trust. Since 1935 The National Trust have allowed the YHA to use the Hall as one if its premier hostels.
There has been a legend for many years that a Grey Lady wanders the grounds and has been seen on occasion in the Italian Gardens. Staff have uncomfortable feelings, especially at night when walking along the first floor of the main Hall, while shadowy figures have also been seen outside the gatehouse.
