Lyric Theatre;-Dinnington

THE phantom of the opera has been given a new twist after spooky goings on at a much-loved old theatre.

Strange happenings have led to rumours that Dinnington's 95-year-old Lyric Theatre—now in the middle of a major multi-thousand pound facelift—could be haunted.
The historic theatre—famous for variety stars such as Ken Dodd and Danny La Rue-—was once part of the music hall circuit notorious as the "graveyard" of comics who "died" by failing to get laughs.
Ghosts of performers past maybe trying to upstage their modern counterparts as the theatre enters a new era.
Cold chills, lights flashing without being turned on or connected, objects rolling uphill—and photographs claimed to be of afterlife spiritual "orbs" summoned up by mediums—lend weight to the theatre's unearthly reputation.
Built in 1910, the former ice rink—which once shared the premises with the Palace Cinema which later moved next door—has a plenty of historical figures to conure up.
Now it's future's looks secure after the venue—a well known Second World War dancehall—was recently fitted with a new Canadian maple floor costing £122,000.

Work on the second phase—to build a new entrance access complying with disability laws and relocate the bar to create a new lounge area—starts in November. Somebody certainly seems to be keeping an eye on the old place from up above.
"Stories about ghosts abound," according to David Jones, chairman of Dinnington Operatic Society, who recently returned to the Lyric after an association of more than 30 years.
One theory suggests the ghost of the the Lyric's legendary theatre club founder Ivan Jepson—who died at the theatre—may be at work.
