Palace Hotel ;- Southport
"In 1969, a gang of demolition workers arrived at the Palace Hotel to pull it down. Before they were to complete the job, however, the 12-man team were to experience many unusual happenings at this large hotel.
Strange voices were heard coming from empty rooms and the corridor on the second floor, and the lift suddenly and inexplicably moved upwards and downwards of it’s own volition, in spite of the fact that the electric supply to the building had been cut off several weeks before the demolition work had commenced.
On one occasion, nine men entered the foyer and were totally amazed to see the lift doors suddenly close and the lift-car ascend, stopping at a point a little below the level of the second floor. Thinking that they were victims of a practical joker, two of the men ran up the stairs to the winding room, only to find that the lift braking system was in the “on” position, which should have made it completely impossible for the lift to have moved. The emergency hand-winding gear for cranking the lift had already been removed. To avoid any further movement of the lift, the two men cut the lift cable, but to their complete amazement, even when this had been done, the lift-car remained unmovable. It was only after the lift shafts had been cut, and considerable force had been used with heavy hammers, that finally the lift-car crashed to the basement, burying itself several feet into the ground.
What the demolition men did not know before they started work at the hotel, was that many strange things had happened there during it’s normal commercial life. Certainly one of the corridors, that on the second floor, was known to be haunted, and a dog, taken to the corridor, had refused to budge, although the same dog had no objection to walking down other apparently identical corridors in the hotel.
At one time the hotel had been used for the care of victims of a sea tragedy, also as a red cross hospital during the war and some of the victims had indeed died there, which would possibly account for the eerie noises heard on the second floor, but more interesting, a man had committed suicide on the second floor many years previously and there is also the story of little girl murdered ;- Amanda Graham, She was found by a chambermaid stuffed under a bed in one of the rooms of The Palace, sometime around 1961. They found the person responsible for it. She had been sexually molestered and we are told dismembered. She was about 7 or maybe 8 years old at the time and the to the locals it was a shock to all that had lived in the town because of the innocence lost.
