The Zoo was founded in the 1950's, it shares its location with the remains of an 1861 fort, which is built over the remains of a previous fort. The original fort at Sandown Zoo was put there to help defend the coast against the threat of a french invasion. Some of the fort is still visible, although these areas are staff only. Past stories include a particularly nasty accident, when a young soldier failed to get out of the way of a large gun coming towards him. Does this young soldier still haunt his old fort?
