Yarmouth Castle ;- Isle of WightYarmouth Castle was once a part of King Henry the 8ths coastal defences and at the time was the very latest fashion in military engineering. It was completed in1547, square in shape, two sides on land and two sides in the sea . Throughout the commonwealth period Oliver Cromwell kept a large garrison here as the Isle of Wight was strongly royalist during the Civil war.
In 1667 Sir Robert Holmes was appointed as Captain of the island, by this time the Castle was no longer needed, so he reduced it in size, had the moat filled and built himself a home which is now the hotel that stands on the site. An ghost of a royalist soldier as been seen here.
