A Brief Introduction to Satanism

Basic Satanic Philosophy
The Nine Satanic Statements
1. Satan represents indulgence instead of abstinence.
2. Satan represents vital existence instead of spiritual pipe dreams.
3. Satan represents undefiled wisdom instead of hypocritical self-deceit.
4. Satan represents kindness to those who deserve it instead of love wasted on ingrates.
5. Satan represents vengeance instead of turning the other cheek.
6. Satan represents responsibility to the responsible instead of concern for psychic vampires.
7. Satan represents man as just another animal, sometimes better, more often worse than those that walk on all-fours, who, because of his “divine spiritual and intellectual development,” has become the most vicious animal of all.
8. Satan represents all of the so-called sins, as they all lead to physical, mental, or emotional gratification.
9. Satan has been the best friend the Church has ever had, as He has kept it in business all these years.
The Satanic Rules of the Earth
1. Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.
2. Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.
3. When in another’s lair, show him respect or else do not go there.
4. If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat him cruelly and without mercy.
5. Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.
6. Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and he cries out to be relieved.
7. Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.
8. Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself.
9. Do not harm little children.
10. Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.
11. When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask him to stop. If he does not stop, destroy him.

How Satanists view "Satan"
The most common misunderstanding concerning Satanism, is most certainly the projection of a belief in a literal Devil. Because a Satanist rejects the classical idea of "God", it must be assumed that he will also dismiss the classical depiction of the Devil. This assumption, would be accurate; there is little to be gained in worshipping evil for evils' sake.
Therefore, a more accurate description is necessary. Satanists generally view Satan as a force of nature, a part of the natural world that is all around us. It would be easy to point to the Nine Satanic Statements (reproduced above) and claim them to represent Satan. While that's true, there is slightly more to the overall idea.
As a force of nature, Satan will represent raw emotions, emotions that are naturally in contradiction to what "God" would represent. Where "God" views instinctual nature as a weakness, Satan would view it as an inherent strength. While "God" reports unconditional love and forgiveness, Satan would encourage discrimination and discernement when dealing with both. While "God" could be considered humble, content and abstinent, Satan must be considered proud, ambitious and indulgent.
In this description, "God" and Satan are merely ideas, personified to resonate a better understanding of their respective energies. Satanists generally do not believe in a literal or independent entity, as this would be against the Satanic ideals of individuality and free thought, simply by default. Obviously, because a Satanist rejects the ideals of the Bible, he will reject the ideals of the Biblical "Satan".
Interestingly enough, Satan isn't a name; it's a translation. From the original Hebrew, the name literally translates as "Adversary". Within the Biblical context it first appears, this means "Adversary of God". Satanists are, of course, adverserial toward Christianity and its doctrines, but they are also adverserial in the common definition of the word.
Satanists will rarely accept what they are told at face value, typically showing a very deep scepticism and cynicism toward general human activity. The edict "guilty until proven innocent", would most certainly apply, with an inherent analytical need often prevalent. This, quite naturally, makes it very hard to con a Satanist and they are, invariably, stern judges of character. Again, this is indicative of what Satan represents.
In short, Satan as a theistic idea holds little weight with the vast majority of Satanists. The idea of serving such a deity, is contradictory to Satanic philosophy per se. Preferable, then, is the "real world" belief that Satan represents nature, more specifically, human nature and all the instinctual and carnal traits that go with it.
