Woolly leader of the pack

Being saved from certain death in a slaughterhouse would do strange things to your mind - but for one lucky lamb life has become simply baah-king.

Billy is a six-month-old lamb who loves nothing more than a run out with his canine friends at the animal rescue centre where he lives.

The mixed-up animal was rescued from an abbattoir after being born just after his mother had died and has since enjoyed his new surroundings at the Wildlives Centre in Essex where he can be seen frolicking in the fields with the dogs.

"He really does think he's a dog," said Rosie Catford, who runs the centre.

"He has been surrounded by dogs ever since he arrived here and spends every waking minute with them. He has basically joined the pack and runs around with them playing with them and even sleeps with them."

The sheep that thinks he's a dog has become a popular attraction for visitors to the centre near Colchester.

"They find it hilarious when we call the dogs and they see Billy in the middle of them running across the field."

Q. Can a chimpanzee apply Euclid's definition that a straight line is "the shortest distance between two points"?

A. To test "cognitive maps" in nonhuman primates, researcher Emil Menzel carried a chimp around with him while hiding food in 18 locations on a large field, in clumps of grass or behind other natural cover, says John P. Dworetzky in "Psychology."

Then the chimp was returned to the starting point and released along with five other chimps that had not observed the food placement. As you might guess, it was the first chimp that found almost all the food. He even knew to take "Euclidean shortcuts" across parts of the field he hadn't been in, not just mechanically retracing steps.

He didn't have a perfect score, however. But this set the researchers to laughing because when they went to find the missing food, they too had forgotten where it was.
