Bath's ghosts

The spirits seem to like the spirits in historical Bath and that could be the reason why they cohabit many of the pubs there!

The Beehive pub in Lansdown has a barmaid who just couldn't say goodbye to the place.

Bunty is an 18th century barmaid who likes to open and shut doors and rattle saucepan lids just to let everyone know she's still around.

Further into the city centre, next to the Theatre Royal is the Garricks Head.

In the ladies loos there many people have reported feeling the sudden and distinct presence of jasmine scented perfume.

Thought to be the Grey Lady, this could be her little pit stop before she moves next door to visit the theatre.

The George in Bathampton is visited by an 18th century Frenchman, Jean Baptiste Du Barr'e who died in the pub after being carried there following a duel.

In December, on the anniversary of his death, he has been seen leaning on the bar.

On the road opposite the Theatre Royal in Bath there is a high medieval wall by the pavement, on the other side of which is a long drop.

At the bottom of this drop it is said that plague victims were buried, when the wall marked the outskirts of the city.

Apparently wailing and groaning voices can still be heard floating up from the depths.

There have been all sorts of reported sightings of ghosts at the Theatre Royal, including that of the Grey Lady.

The most intriguing, however, is that of a tortoiseshell butterfly who is supposed to reappear during every Christmas pantomime.

It all started in 1948 when the then Christmas pantomime included a butterfly ballet and a live tortoiseshell butterfly was seen flying about. This is the same one that is reportedly seen to this day.
